Why I Speak Yoruba Fluently: Ramsey Nouah Clarifies His Nationality and Mixed Heritage

Veteran Nollywood actor Ramsey Nouah has surprised many of his fans by opening up about his mixed heritage and clearing up long-standing misconceptions about his cultural background. During a recent guest appearance on the popular web show Curiosity Made Me Ask, the 55-year-old film icon explained the roots of his cultural identity and his impressive command of the Yoruba language.

For years, fans have speculated about the actor's origins due to his unique looks. However, Nouah clarified that his deep connection to the Yoruba culture is entirely natural. Born and raised in Lagos, the actor revealed that his mother hails from Ondo State, which naturally influenced his upbringing and language skills.

The Ondo Connection and Growing Up in Lagos

According to the actor, speaking Yoruba fluently is not a skill he had to force. Growing up in the vibrant city of Lagos under the care of his Yoruba mother gave him first-hand exposure to the language from a very young age. His explanation has sparked widespread conversation online, with many social media users admitting they had held incorrect assumptions about his background for decades.

A Legacy of Excellence in Nollywood

Ramsey Nouah rose to fame in the early 1990s and quickly established himself as one of the most recognizable faces in the Nigerian film industry. Over the years, his versatile acting skills have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2010 for his exceptional performance in the critically acclaimed movie, The Figurine.

In recent years, Nouah has successfully transitioned from being in front of the camera to directing major projects. He made his directorial debut in 2019 with the blockbuster sequel Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, and has since remained a vital force behind the scenes in Nollywood.

Insights on the Nigerian Cinema Industry

Beyond his cultural roots, the veteran actor also recently shared his thoughts on the financial realities of filmmaking in Nigeria. He pointed out that releasing movies directly to cinemas may not always be the best financial decision for producers. According to Nouah, high advertising costs and promotional expenses often make it difficult for filmmakers to recover their initial capital investments through cinema runs alone.

His wealth of experience has also served as a guiding light for younger colleagues. Actress Adunni Ade recently shared how Nouah gave her pivotal career advice back in 2011, urging her to relocate to Nigeria to fully tap into the opportunities within the local entertainment industry.
