The Yobe State House of Assembly has approved the establishment of a State Police Service as part of its resolutions on the proposed alterations to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, transmitted by the National Assembly to state legislatures for consideration and approval.

The resolution was reached during plenary following deliberations by members of the House on the proposed constitutional amendment bills, which require the approval of at least two-thirds of the state Houses of Assembly in accordance with the constitutional amendment process.

Speaking on  resolution the speaker of the House Chiroma Buba Mashio said the  bills were forwarded to state legislatures to consider and vote on the proposed changes in line with the constitutional requirements for altering the nation's supreme law.

Mashio has clarified that the House position on the proposed establishment of State Police is aimed at providing  a constitutional framework that would enable  states to maintain their own police services alongside the existing Nigeria Police Force.

The speaker  said the proposed establishment of  State Police Service, is a key  component of ongoing national discussions on security sector reform aimed at  strengthening the country's capacity to address emerging security challenges.

The proposed alterations cover 26 bills aimed at amending various provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

The approval of the State Police proposal by the Yobe Assembly reflects the legislature's position on the proposed constitutional change, which seeks to provide a legal framework for the establishment of police services at the state level.
