DRC's senate passes referendum bill that could see Tshisekedi run for third term
The Democratic Republic of Congo's senate unanimously approved a referendum law that could allow President Felix Tshisekedi to seek a third term in office.
"Of the 78 senators who took part in the vote, 78 voted in favour of the bill, no votes against or abstentions were recorded," Senate President Jean-Michel Sama said.
The draft legislation would now be sent to the president for promulgation after the National Assembly approved it days earlier.
Once enacted, the law would allow the president to amend the constitution through a constituent assembly followed by a referendum in the event of a "major dysfunction" of state institutions.
