The Nigeria Police Force says it has rescued a 21-year-old Nigerian woman who was allegedly trafficked to Mali after being promised a well-paying job abroad.
Three suspected members of an international trafficking network were arrested during the investigation, according to a briefing by the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad in Abuja on November 3.
Police said the woman was taken from Nigeria through the Republic of Benin to a gold-mining settlement in Mali, where she was allegedly sold for CFA420,000, approximately ₦770,000, and subjected to sexual exploitation.
According to investigators, her phone and travel documents were taken from her, cutting off contact with her family. A report by her sister prompted the investigation that eventually led to her rescue.
Police said the operations, conducted during October, also led to the rescue of three other women who were reunited with their families.
The force said the survivor reported that other Nigerian women were still being held in a remote settlement in Mali. Investigations and efforts to locate additional victims and members of the alleged network are continuing.
